ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque engineering firm Verus Research is steadily growing its operations at the CBRE Centre at 6100 Uptown Boulevard, where the firm just signed a new lease for another 2,700 square feet of space.
The latest expansion gives the company 12,700 square feet on one floor of the six-story building, said David Miles, marketing director for Allen Sigmon Real Estate Co. That’s up from 3,400 square feet when Verus first launched operations in 2014.
“They just signed the new lease last week,” Miles said.
The company’s ballooning presence in Uptown reflects its rapid growth in high-tech engineering work with public and private customers, including contracts with NASA and all three branches of the U.S. Department of Defense. The company specializes in research and development of lasers, radio frequency communications like high-power microwaves, and nuclear engineering, with extensive modeling, simulation, testing and design work at two high-tech labs that it manages in other parts of the city.
This month, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base awarded Verus a new $2.3 million contract to analyze ways of integrating high-power electromagnetic technology into military weapons platforms that can destroy or disable electronic systems.
“We’re assisting in transition capability to integrate that technology with current and future weapons platforms,” said Verus Managing Director Hank Andrews. “The goal is to provide war fighters with more options for using the technology.”
The company grew from $2.7 million in revenue in its first full year of operations in 2015 to $8.2 million in revenue last year, earning it a spot on the Journal’s Flying 40 list of fast-growing technology firms two years in a row. Verus employs 56 people, up from 21 in 2015.
The CBRE building provides the space needed to accommodate projected growth, said Rob Powell, a vice president with Allen Sigmon, which has helped Verus on its leasing needs since 2014.
“We’ve worked closely with Hank Andrews on a sound commercial real estate plan,” Powell said in a statement. “The growth they’ve experienced in three years is fantastic. We are very pleased to be working with such a dynamic local company.”
