Higher Risks Lead to Greater Yields for this Real Estate Exec

By Juliana Vadnais / Albuquerque Business First Reporter, February 26th, 4:00pm

Brad Allen has been involved in the real estate industry since 1995. In 2011, he co-founded Allen Sigmon Real Estate Group with Lance Sigmon. He has been involved in the ground-up development and redevelopment of around 900,000 square feet of properties.

What made you want to get into the real estate business? I’ve always wanted to do something with real estate. My granfather developed hotels and my father worked in construction and real estate. It is something I always wanted to do. What seemed attractive about it was the harder you work directly correlates with the success you have.

What keeps you in the industry? It is one of those industries where you can have the American Dream. You start from nothing and help others succeed as well. I wanted to own and develop and invest in land and it has been a great vehicle to allow us to be part of growth in the city and provide opportunites for people to work and be a part of New Mexico. Real estate is so elementary from the standpoint that everyone needs it.

What do you look for in a good investment, a bad one? You look for not what it is today, but what it can become. You want something you can add value to. We try to do something to add value to every project. Everything has potential to be a good deal. We prefer to have some of the unknown that has a higher yield for us and our partners.

What makes a good partnership? Great partnerships are partners you know, like and trust and they know, like and trust you. They are not there to micromanage; they have confidence in what you do. It does take some work but we have been very fortunate to have great partners in business leaders and others in the community.

What do you do to relax and have fun when you aren’t managing your 850,000 square feet of properties? My wife and I have six children so there is always something going on. I enjoy watching my kids’ sports activities. We also have a ranch in the Jemez Mountains and we go up there for family time.
