After decades of serving repeat customers, Rudy Jaramillo is expanding the family business.
Rutilio’s, a New Mexican restaurant run by Jaramillo and his family, is opening its third location, this time in Albuquerque.
The family-owned restaurant is set to open its new location at 1605 Juan Tabo Blvd. NE in the Sandra Plaza next month with Jaramillo’s son, Dan Silva, running the restaurant with his wife, Dinica. Jaramillo owns the Rutilio’s restaurant in Belen while his daughter, Natalie Acanfrio, owns and runs the Los Lunas location.
Jaramillo anticipates seeing a lot of familiar faces once the restaurant opens. “I’ve already heard excitement [around Albuquerque,]” Jaramillo said. “The bad thing about Rutilio’s, and there is a bad thing, is that you will get addicted.”
While this will be Rutilio’s newest location, it is not new to the Duke City. Jaramillo said Rutilio’s had a restaurant in Albuquerque in the 1970s before an economic downturn led to its closing.
Rutilio’s new space was previously occupied by Beto’s Cocina, which has about 1,900 square feet and can accommodate a dining area of about 15 tables. The restaurant, expected to be open between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., primarily serves New Mexican dishes, Silva said. The original Rutilio’s in Belen, NM
Jordan Shipley, an associate broker at Allen Sigmon Real Estate Group, represented Rutilio’s.
Rutilio’s has 23 employees in Belen and is looking to add 15 to 20 staff members to the Albuquerque location. Once it’s in operation, some of the Belen employees, who have been with the restaurant since it opened, will come up to the new Rutilio’s to teach the new employees.
Jaramillo said the restaurant spent between $35,000 to $37,000 on improvements to the facility and equipment, Silva said.
“I’m taking everything my dad served down in Rutilio’s Belen and we’re bringing it up here,” Silva said. “I feel like we can do pretty well over here.”
Despite steady growth over the years, Rutilio’s could look at other expansions around the area while keeping the business within the family.
“The grandkids are coming up. We have a good-sized family,” Jaramillo said. “They’re learning and if they keep the same concept, it will be successful.”
